Concrete is the most common building material in the world, but also the most burdensome. We are involved in The Confederation of Finnish Construction Industries RT 's project to optimize the life cycle of concrete through digitalization. Besides climate impacts, optimization benefits every actor in the concrete life cycle. It also provides a model for the productivity of the entire construction industry.
In the spring of 2021, The Confederation of Finnish Construction Industries RT launched the Betoni 360 -project, which optimizes the entire life cycle of concrete from design, ordering, manufacturing, logistics, installation and quality assurance. So far, each actor has been optimizing only their operations.
The project will use platform technologies to improve the entire lifecycle, bringing benefits to each party. The project is one of the measures of the construction industry to develop the digital life cycle of materials.
The project will be implemented with pilot companies by Platform of Trust and DBE Core together. Platform of Trust is a neutral data platform with built-in data trust features. DBE Core brings a service based on blockchain technology that makes the order supply chain transparent to all its parties.
Supply chain optimization benefits all parties and the entire construction industry
The concrete element was selected as a pilot target because it is one example of how construction projects often run into organizational boundary challenges that cause headaches in terms of security of supply, cost and efficiency. The installation of building elements is critical for the entire site and thus streamlining processes is important.
“The primary goal of the project is to secure a chain of concrete products from design to installation and further to building maintenance. Intact and reliable data ensures that the right goods are moved and installed at the right time and in the right place. The information is stored so that all parties can see the events up to date and verified at all times, ”summarizes Kari Korpela, CEO of DBE Core.
When data is available to all parties, uncertainty and human error are reduced and the emergence of logistical bottlenecks is reduced. There are always changes on the construction site, but in terms of traceability and transparency, process optimization makes it possible to prepare for and manage changes in a completely different way. Efficiency also increases when the order supply chain can be automated.
“We are currently trying something completely new. The use of data increases the productivity and competitiveness of the company and the entire construction industry. It is also in line with climate targets, as it provides the keys to, among other things, precise emission reductions. Digitalization is first and foremost an environmentally responsible activity, ”rejoices Lars Ahlbäck, CEO of Vastuu Group.
Do you wish to streamline your delivery process?
We are looking for a few more pilot companies that want to develop their own construction process or concrete element delivery process and, through it, be involved in the digitalisation of the entire construction industry.
