The new EU level energy efficiency directive is enforcing an apartment specific water consumption measurement system in new apartment buildings. The aim is to both enable sustainability and energy efficiency but also give the residents a possibility to have visibility on the amount of water consumed in each apartment.
Vastuu Group offers a concept that helps building owners follow the directive easily. With the Platform of Trust solution the water consumption information can be collected from different systems and taken collectively and in a harmonized format into billing systems, energy efficiency management reports, and even maintenance planning systems.
The EU regulation only enforces apartment specific water consumption measurement but the concept can be utilized in any building and is useful to any building owner that has multiple water measurement systems in place.
Five Finnish cities are testing the concept
The concept of water consumption monitoring is being created in a project that Vastuu Group and Platform of Trust started with RAKLI which is the association of professional property owners, real estate investors, corporate real estate managers, and construction clients in Finland.
Project participants will be able to decide which water meter systems to support first. Connections to these systems were made in the autumn of 2021, ie data can be retrieved separately from these systems even now, but also clearly using a single service, the Platform of Trust. The project involves now eight publicly owned housing companies in the Finnish cities of Oulu, Lahti, Helsinki, Espoo, and Lappeenranta.
In the initial phase, the project will focus on the transmission of data for billing. However, it is possible to extend it to other purposes such as leakage monitoring and energy efficiency optimization. The platform can also be connected to other data such as utilization rates and thus obtain new utilization areas. Platform of Trust supports the MyData approach, where residents can also give their consent to the use of the data and thus create completely new types of services for them.
